The closest camping to Uluru, Ayers Rock Campground is part of the Ayers Rock Resort.

This is a very large commercial campground, but really the only location if you want to spend some time exploring the rock. The prices don't seem too bad, considering you have access to a laundry, pool, gas barbecues, camp kitchen, etc.

There are a couple of hundred powered and the same amount of un-powered sites. The powered sites have little shelters. Considering you are in the red centre, they have managed to get some grass to grow, which is great for those camping in tents.

Ayers Rock Campground is about 25km from the base of Uluru ( see here) so you can't just up in the morning and walk around the rock.

Amenities are excellent, and well maintained although can get quite busy during the morning and evening rush hour... as you can imagine with up to 400 odd campsites in use.

Bring a few extra dollars with you and enjoy one of the dinner, or breakfast tourist trap things that they do. You go out into the desert and are fed at a table under the stars or watching the sunrise.
