Camping right on the beach at Bathurst Head, a favourite with the fishermen.

This is a must see if you are doing the Cape York Trip. You can launch a boat from the beach and partake in some of the best fishing in Australia, if not the world.

There are a large number of camping spots here, starting where the track joins the beach. My favourite was following the beach to the south where someone had left a corrugated iron fire surround which I took advantage of.

Another unexpected highlight for me was the rock formations not far from camp. It is almost like someone was making an elaborate pastry (roll it, fold it and roll it again).

Don't be put off if you don't have a boat, just take a walk along the beach to the north and watch the water, the marine life comes in to visit (see photos of just a few critters that I took from the shore).

This area is very remote, so is only for experienced, well prepared campers. There are toilets although they are a fair way from the beach camping so most people jump in their cars to duck to the loo.

There is water available from a spring up a small track and some kind person has installed a bath tub under the pipe that is constantly flowing. The water is pretty good for washing up, cooking etc, however you would need to treat it before drinking.

It can get busy here during peak times, and I noticed a lot of people with generators and chest freezers, I assume they were doing some serious fishing!

There is also another track that leads up the headland and offers some excellent views (steep, but not too tricky for any proper 4wd). There also looks like a couple of nice camp spots up there if you don't want to be o the beach with everyone else.

4wd only access.

Getting there

This is a 4wd only campground and the track in can be a bit boggy and rough. If you are venturing into this part of Australia, you will already be well set up, so it shouldn't give you too many problems.

The track also winds through the swampy areas and mallee trees and can be tricky to pick the right track at some spots.
